Summary

A #1 New York Times bestseller!

One year ago, the Joker limped off the streets of Gotham, mutilated and scarred when someone had taken the pale white skin right off of his face。

But now, the Dark Knight’s greatest foe has returned but for once, Batman doesn’t seem to be his target。 Instead, the Joker turns his vile hatred towards Commissioner Gordon, Alfred, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Red Hood and Red Robin … the only family Bruce Wayne has left。 The Clown Prince of Crime will unleash his most unpredictable, vicious and psychotic assault ever on everyone Batman holds dear。

Can Batman stop his arch-rival’s most deranged assault ever? Or will the cost of a deadly secret be a family member’s life?

#1 New York Times best-selling creators Scott Snyder (AMERICAN VAMPIRE) and Greg Capullo (Spawn) present the long-awaited return of the Joker, as he unleashes his most terrifying, personal assault ever on the Dark Knight。 BATMAN: DEATH OF THE FAMILY collects BATMAN #13-17 along with backup stories illustrated by award-winning artist Jock (BATMAN: THE BLACK MIRROR)。

Meus amigos!! I have been looking forward to this storyline, as it was pretty much the main reason I decided to pick up the New 52 Batman comics。 For years, I knew that Joker had his face surgically removed, strapped it back on, and went back to haunt Batman, so I had to know what the fuzz was all about。 In Death of the Family, the Joker returns to Gotham City after a year's absence, breaking into the police department to recover his face and committing crimes that harken back to his very first confrontations I have been looking forward to this storyline, as it was pretty much the main reason I decided to pick up the New 52 Batman comics。 For years, I knew that Joker had his face surgically removed, strapped it back on, and went back to haunt Batman, so I had to know what the fuzz was all about。 In Death of the Family, the Joker returns to Gotham City after a year's absence, breaking into the police department to recover his face and committing crimes that harken back to his very first confrontations with Batman。 When Joker claims to know the secret identities of every member of the Bat-Family, tensions arise between Batman and his allies as Batman tries to stop the Joker alone。 My biggest surprise was how well Scott Snyder writes the Joker。 I thought that this version of the character would be really edgy, seeing how the idea of having him willingly have his face removed is a very macabre and far out idea。 While this version of Joker sure is one of those that depict him as a sociopathic killer, Snyder gives him both an intimidating presence and a twisted sense of humor - there's one especially great moment involving a wounded horse and an unfortunate Arkham guard。 He is unpredictable, but has a plan and is definetely not stupid - one just have to know him very well to have an idea of what his plan is。 Even the cut-off face, over the top as it is, serves a purpose that is very much in line with who the Joker is。 Capullo's (and Jock's) art is once again amazing, and he gets a lot of interesting material to work with。 The story has a really cool, mysterious, grotesque, and sometimes even Gothic atmosphere - Joker's design is very macabre, a lion kitty is born with two heads as a terrible omen of what's to come, and a central idea is that Batman is a medieval king of Gotham, with Joker being his jester and Batman's other villains being his court。 The latter lends for some epic, medieval images, and Capullo pulls those off really well。 Of course, the Joker doesn't target just Batman, but the entire Bat-Family, and this volume really only collects the stories focusing on Batman。 To get a richer experience, one could read the tie-in comics, and I'm interested enough in the storyline to do so eventually, but this volume is still a really good self-contained story by itself。 The reason for this is that Batman actually has something to do while Joker targets the other members of the Bat-Family - unlike on the Night of Owls where the Bat-Family mostly fought all the Talons in Gotham City and Batman (after one major fight with Talons at Wayne Manor) didn't do that much himself but track down the Court。 This story really captivated me, and if I had had the chance to finish it in one sitting, I would've done that。 Snyder really gets the complicated relationship between Batman and Joker and comes up with one interesting answer to an age-old question: why hasn't Batman just killed the Joker yet? And no - the answer isn't because then the Joker would win - it's a much more unorthodox answer and one that Batman - and the reader - definetely has to take in。。。 。。。more

A definitive Joker story。 Snyder lifted the best elements from Moore, Miller and Morrison's Jokers and took them further, adding one final punchline that is all his own。 A definitive Joker story。 Snyder lifted the best elements from Moore, Miller and Morrison's Jokers and took them further, adding one final punchline that is all his own。 。。。more

I know Joker has been used to the extend of comics and Batman fans getting sicked of even hearing his name。 But。。。 well, Joker is a presence, like the one who makes everyone drop their arms and pray。 He is not my favorite villain, not close but still he has the best arcs, he is as sadistic as Hannibal Lecter and now he even looks like Leatherface。Here we get to see that。 It's not with super powers, not by chance or because society did blablabla to you; to the wicked, to the poor or the loosers。 I know Joker has been used to the extend of comics and Batman fans getting sicked of even hearing his name。 But。。。 well, Joker is a presence, like the one who makes everyone drop their arms and pray。 He is not my favorite villain, not close but still he has the best arcs, he is as sadistic as Hannibal Lecter and now he even looks like Leatherface。Here we get to see that。 It's not with super powers, not by chance or because society did blablabla to you; to the wicked, to the poor or the loosers。 Joker doesn't hate Batman, he really just wants a good show and he doesn't care about anyone or any material thing。Carring the Court of Owls arc, Joker comes back maybe because he knows Batman is weak, because he knows Batman started to think that maybe it was time for him to let the family take the helm。 Batman started to get weak, and Joker knows it。 As a story, there's a lot of characters, very old known characters。 He adresses Harley just as a tool (in a very sad and dark way), he points Riddler as the most useful way of making Batman keep in shape about his brains, and Penguin as the one and only mafia worthy (here's the connection to Emperor Penguin arc [which I have read and loved])。 He also knows that a Batman who cares for his family is a 'weak' bat。 And again Batman fails on doing exactly what Joker wants。 And that's also something that reminded me of the Arkham videogames。So。。。 this isn't my favorite Batman arc nor my favorite vilain。 But the way the story unfolds was amazing for me。 It's like, what is worthy of being told in a comic story。 You can get dark on the narrative and the illustrations all the same。 。。。more

Creepy!factor upped to high levels。 A very good, awful, bloody, mind- and stomach-turning Joker story which reminded me why and how I detest Joker and how I'd really like they killed him once and for all (and how I like the Bat!family with all its silences, secrets, bitterness, but also love。 The ending - with all the little bats staying away from the manor - just about broke my heart)。 Creepy!factor upped to high levels。 A very good, awful, bloody, mind- and stomach-turning Joker story which reminded me why and how I detest Joker and how I'd really like they killed him once and for all (and how I like the Bat!family with all its silences, secrets, bitterness, but also love。 The ending - with all the little bats staying away from the manor - just about broke my heart)。 。。。more

Snyder and Capullo's Batman started with such promise。 The Court of Owls storyline was actually original, adding to the Gotham mythos。 Death of the Family, on the other hand, is just more of the same。 "Über-badass" wannabe writing, with the latest super creepy Joker take trying to top all the other super creepy Joker takes since at least the 80s。 This doesn't even have the stakes of the original Death IN the Family storyline which resulted in an iconic (long since undone) main death character de Snyder and Capullo's Batman started with such promise。 The Court of Owls storyline was actually original, adding to the Gotham mythos。 Death of the Family, on the other hand, is just more of the same。 "Über-badass" wannabe writing, with the latest super creepy Joker take trying to top all the other super creepy Joker takes since at least the 80s。 This doesn't even have the stakes of the original Death IN the Family storyline which resulted in an iconic (long since undone) main death character death。 Spoiler: everyone makes it out alright in the end。 So now Joker is so psycho he tore of his face and stretched it back on。 Disturbing enough? Yawn。 Cue big crossover with all the Bat-family having to face the clown prince of crime。 Also: Why would anyone in a superhero universe ever work in a villain prison? Seriously, half of the guards at Arkham are killed or tortured for the millionth time。 Is this ever acknowledged in-universe。。。 Not to mention on one page 19 whole cops are killed, while Gordon is fine。 It's just too much。 And back to the status quo when over。 Personally, I found the 2001 Joker's Last Laugh epic more fun with metahumans super powers。 Or Emperor Joker over in the Superman books circa-2000 with cosmic scifi。 (Showing my age am I?)Well, this is New 52 DC。 It's more grownup now or something。 So prepare for Batman pushed to the edge and violence and edginess but not really etc。~ 。。。more

The story ultimately achieves nothing at the end even though it presented and ramped itself up for a climactic life changing ending。 The Joker just lies and manipulates and in the end doesn't win and you feel like it was all kinda hollow。 Personal Opinion: I was not a fan of how Greg Capullo was handling the classic rogues, especially with the "First Snow" Mr。 Freeze story。 So I was very skeptical how he would handle Joker, and to my surprise I dug what he did。 I felt like Joker worked very well as a horror story, but since it was written as a horror story I wanted it too end like one。 For some reason I am already forgetting I read this two weeks later!! The ending just felt so unclimactic and could've dug deeper into the Joker but instead just went for the hollow ending of him escaping。 The inclusion of the Riddler and the rogues sprinkled in was nice, but I still felt like the Joker was off balanced in this story。 With him killing hundreds of people with umbrellas and then spoiler(Not actually cutting off the bat-families faces) really threw off his character。 Overall I felt like this intrigued me again to go on and read Zero Year, since I didn't care for "City of Owls"and was skeptical to pick this one up。 But, overall this new 52 run has me loving certain aspects and then falling straight on it's face in another issue。 RECOMMEND IF YOU LIKE JOKER STORIES AND DARKER BATMAN STORIES! But, overall the ending didn't do it for me。 。。。more

This needs to be read with the other volumes in the Death of the Family。 It would be better (to me) to have them all in one story。 You feel while you're reading that something is missing。 But it's a very interesting concept that the extended bat-family has made Batman weak and the Joker just wants to bring the true dynamic duo back to the good old days。 I love the Joker。 This needs to be read with the other volumes in the Death of the Family。 It would be better (to me) to have them all in one story。 You feel while you're reading that something is missing。 But it's a very interesting concept that the extended bat-family has made Batman weak and the Joker just wants to bring the true dynamic duo back to the good old days。 I love the Joker。 。。。more

Definitely one of the best Batman & Joker stories out there。 Super dark。 Very bloody。 Kinda wish it was a little more climactic。 Like the finish felt too fast? Love the Joes Garage look he sports for the first half。 Super menacing but also cool in a gruesome way。 Even more excited for Endgame since I’ve heard it’s like this but better。
